Computer Access by Appointment FAQs
    • Computer Access by Appointment allows customers the opportunity to use library computers and printing service at select HPL locations by appointment. Appointments may be made up to 7 days in advance. Sessions are limited to one 45-minute appointment per day.

    • Beginning March 8, 2021, Computer Access by Appointment will be available at the following locations, with additional sites coming soon:

    • What are the hours of service?
      Computer Access by Appointment appointments are available during hours of operation:

      • Monday 12 PM – 7 PM
      • Tuesday 12PM – 4 PM
      • Wednesday 10 AM – 4 PM
      • Thursday 12 PM – 4 PM
      • Friday 10 AM – 4 PM
      • Saturday 10 AM – 4 PM

      Please note: Same-day appointments can be made up to 30 minutes prior to closing.

    • Each appointment is 45 minutes. Once your session has ended, if you need to schedule another appointment, please speak to the location staff about scheduling another appointment.

    • Because the system is appointment-based, staff are unable to extend sessions at this time. Please be sure to save your work before your session ends.

    • Appointments may be made up to 7 days in advance. You can schedule your appointment online here. You can also call your local library to schedule your appointment over the phone.

    • Important safety protocols are being implemented to ensure the safety of customers and staff including:

      • Temperature screening for anyone age 2 years and up prior to entering the library.
      • Anyone age 2 years and up will be required to wear a face covering at all times in the library.
      • Physical distancing of at least 6 feet between customers and staff must be maintained at all times.
      • Computer keyboards will have a protective plastic covering. Staff will clean keyboards and  mice between sessions.
    • In order to maintain physical distancing and limit large gatherings in our buildings, appointments are being implemented. You may be able to make a same-day appointment, depending on availability.

    • Customers will need a library card in order to make their appointment, and will need their card number on the day of their appointment. Customers can use their HPL MY Link card, Learning Link card, and online e-cards. If you do not have a library card, you can sign up for one here. Options to apply by mail or email are also available.

    • Customers needing computer assistance may bring 1 person with them to help them during their session. For your safety and for the safety of staff, one-on-one computer assistance is not available at this time.

    • For your safety, and in order to help maintain social distancing, we encourage customers to bring no more than 1 guest with them. Your children are important, and we want them to have a rewarding library experience. Children cannot be left unattended and/or unsupervised while in the library, and they will not have access to the children’s area during your appointment.

    • Your computer access appointment will allow you to use a computer. Printing services are available during your appointment. Credit or debit is recommended or exact change. Please note: if using a card, there is a $1.00 minimum charge, with a $10 temporary hold on your credit card. Printing in black and white is $0.15/page and prints in color are $0.50/page.  Location staff do not have change onsite. You may be able to copy or scan during your appointment. Fax services are not available at this time.

    • Appointments are only 45 minutes. The reservation system will automatically cancel any sessions after 30 minutes of inactivity. If you need to reschedule your appointment for a future date, please speak to the location staff or make a future appointment here.

    • The reservation system will automatically cancel any appointments not started within 15 minutes of their scheduled time. If needed, please contact the library location to reschedule your appointment or reschedule your appointment here

    • Beginning March 8, 2021, Virtual Interview Rooms will be available at select library locations, including:

      • Henington-Alief Regional Library
      • Smith Neighborhood Library
      • Stimley-Blue Ridge Neighborhood Library

      Customers conducting virtual interviews may reserve these rooms by calling one of these library locations or by scheduling your appointment through the library’s website. For your safety, no more than 2 people may use the room at a time.

    • Access to the collection and certain areas of the library is restricted to staff only. Customers will not be able to browse or request materials during their computer appointment. If you have holds available for pickup at the time of your computer appointment, please schedule your HPL TO GO appointment here. Customers will not be able to check out their own holds in person at this time.  

    • Only customers with existing appointments will be allowed into the building. Library Wi-Fi is available for customers 24/7. The free “HPL Outdoors” Wi-Fi network allows customers to connect to our network from the parking lot at select locations.

Library Card FAQs
    • A valid library card is one that has not expired and has a total of less than $10 in fines and fees pending. 

    • Cards expire after three years if not used.  Youth cards automatically expire on the 18th birthday of the cardholder.

    • Come to HPL and bring a photo ID with your current address. You can also submit the Update MY Link Account form and we will renew your library card once we have verified your address. 

    • Card expired?

    • PINs are codes of 4 or more digits that must be used when logging in to your account or checking items out at a self-check machine.

    • You can change your PIN after you log in to your account online or in person at any library location 'photo ID required'.

    • You can visit any library location with your library card and ID and staff can look up your PIN and/or reset it for you. You can also use the “Forgot PIN?” link on the My Account login screen.

    • 50 items at one time. Format limits: DVDs are limited to up to 30 (15 juvenile and 15 adult). Hold limits: 30 items at one time.  

    • Books, e-books, e-audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, mobile hotspots and other devices as available.

    • "My Checkout History" Log into your account and check the “Show My Checkout History” box under Preferences. You will be able to see all the items you check out from this point forward. Any items checked out before this option was turned on will not show up on the list.

    • Check-out period is 3 weeks, with the option of three renewal for eligible items, for a total loan period of 12 weeks. Loan periods for e-books and e-audiobooks vary.  Eligible items automatically renew at five days before the due date. Ineligible items include those with holds or that have already been renewed three times.

    • Online through the "My Account" link, which can be found at the top of every page on the website. Items eligible for renewal renew from the due date, giving you full 6 weeks checkout period. It is recommended that you make a note of the new due date after renewing or call 832-393-2280.

      • Items on library cards with fines or fees of $10 or more
      • Items on library cards that have expired
      • Items already renewed three times
      • Items checked out for the maximum loan period of 12 weeks
      • Items on hold for another borrower
      • Items borrowed through our Interlibrary Loan Service
      • Mobile hotspots
    • Any HPL location. Most HPL locations have book drops for your convenience after hours.
      Please return mobile hotspots and other devices at the location where it was borrowed from. 

    • Most items adult items are $0.20 per day and juvenile $0.10 per day.

    • Yes, fines can be paid online through the My Account feature:

      • Non-refundable $0.50 transaction fee is charged for online credit card payments
      • Minimum credit card payment is $1
    • If library materials are not returned within 30 days of the due date, you will receive a billing notice from the Library. In addition to the replacement cost of the lost item, you will be charged a $10 non-refundable processing fee for each cataloged item or a $5 non-refundable partial processing fee for each uncataloged item that is lost. The same charges apply to items returned with serious damage. We work with a collection agency to send bills and collect fees on our behalf. The library cannot accept replacement items in lieu of lost items. Items returned with damage that warrants withdrawal from the library's collection will be treated as lost.

    • You can present a photo ID with your current address. The address on your ID must match the address in your borrower record. You may also scan the barcode from the HPL mobile app to use at many of our self checkout machines available at most locations. 

    • You are responsible for all items checked out and all fines and fees charged to your account up until the day you report to the Library that the card has been lost or stolen. To prevent others from charging materials to your account, report your lost or stolen library card to us as soon as possible. Staff can issue a new replacement card the next time you visit the library.     • Only staff at the Central Library can issue a TexShare card. You must be a city of Houston resident. You must have an HPL card that is at least 6 months old, valid and no outstanding fines. TexShare card can also be renewed at Central Library.

      • A TexShare card does not guarantee that you will be able to borrow materials from other libraries. You can then get a library card from a TexShare participating library.
      • In most cases, it is a good idea to use library's interlibrary loan service to borrow materials from another library.
      • Texas residents and non-residents with TexShare card must first register as an HPL library card member. More information is available at Texas State Library and Archives Commission.
      • All TexShare cards expire annually on July 31 regardless of when they were issued.

COVID-19 Closure FAQs
    • The safety of our customers and staff is the number one priority of the Houston Public Library.?With the COVID-19 outbreak still a community concern, we made the difficult decision to close our libraries to the public and cancel programs and events to take precaution against the spread of COVID-19 and protect staff and customers. Our phased re-opening plan began on June 1st with curbside pick-up through our HPL TO GO service.  Staff are available to answer reference questions during curbside hours of operation. Please visit the library’s website for a list of virtual programming, and to see a list of online resources you can access from home. 

    • Customers may place holds on library materials through the library’s online catalog or the HPL app for pickup by appointment at one of our HPL TO GO locations. Please note: it may take up to two weeks for the item to be ready for pickup if that item is being transferred from another location. 

    • Any Texas Resident can get a MY Link card! Non-Residents may purchase a one-year membership.  You can get instant access to our online resources with our online registration. 

      While the library is closed due to COVID-19, parents can sign-up their children for an online e-card to access Houston Public Library e-resources.

    • You may return books at any of our book drops. For your peace of mind, no new late fees and fines will be assessed during the closure period, retroactive to March 14, 2020. If you have Interlibrary Loan books checked out, please note that Houston Public Library cannot extend due dates beyond what the lending library allows. Interlibrary Loan books may be returned in any HPL?book drop on their due date. 

    • All items returned during this time will be placed in quarantine for 7 days. It may take up to 9 days for returned items to be removed from your account. There will be no fines or late fees until further notice.

    • Until further notice, expired library cards will be renewed automatically.  Please call 832-393-1313 for questions about your account.  

    • Use the "Did you forget your PIN?" link when you click "Log In" through the library’s website. You can also call 832-393-2222 Monday-Friday 10am to 5pm for assistance.

    • As of October 12, 2020, HPL TO GO by appointment is available at the following locations: Blue-Ridge, Bracewell, Central (walk up only), Collier, Heights, Henington-Alief, Hillendahl, Johnson, Jungman, Looscan, McCrame Kashmere Gardens, Moody, Park Place, Robinson-Westchase, Scenic Woods, Shepard-Acres Homes, Smith, Stanaker, McGovern-Stella Link, TECHLink Dixon, Tuttle, Walter, and Young during the following times:

    • HPL has a robust collection of online resources that are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can find resources including e-books, e-audiobooks, streaming music and videos, online learning, online tutoring, and much more.

    • Children enrolled in Houston ISD and Alief ISD have Learning Link cards that enables them to use our online resources.

    • Library Wi-Fi is available for customers 24/7. The free “HPL Outdoors” Wi-Fi network allows customers to connect to our network from the parking lot at select locations.

    • When the library re-opens, passport services will resume. Passport acceptance facilities across the country have suspended services. Please visit the State Department website to find a location that may still be open.

    • Currently, meeting rooms are not available for reservations while our locations remain closed to the public. Please check back for any updates.

    • We ask that you do not bring donations to our locations.  Please hold on to them until the library resumes full services.

Hotspots/Laptops FAQs
    • Visit the library catalog to place a hold today for a Mobile hotspot!

      • Customer must present a valid adult library card with no pending fines/fees.
      • Customer must present a valid, government issued photo ID. 
      • Customer will submit a checkout agreement each time a device is checked out.
      • Devices may be returned to the service desk.
      • Devices may be returned to any HPL location.
      • Only one type of device per person per card may be checked out.
      • If damaged or lost, replacement fees may apply.
      • Technical support is available Monday - Friday, 9 AM- 5 PM, at 281-387-7998
      • Replacement fee if lost/damaged: $80 + $10 processing fee
      • Damaged case/charger/cord: $10 per item
    • Yes. Here it is.

      • Before using the Hotspot, charge it for 3 hours. You  may still use it while it is charging.
      • To turn the Hotspot device on, press and hold the power button until you see the word  “Welcome” on the LCD screen.
      • In order to get a better wireless signal, make sure you are in an area that is covered by the Sprint network.
      • The wifi network name and password appear on the LCD screen. It is printed on the label of some devices.
      • The Hotspot device works on most wifi enabled devices such as laptops, desktops, smart phones and tablets. To connect your device, find the wifi network name on your device and connect to it.
      • The Hotspot battery will last between 8 to 24 hours depending on usage. To shut down or turn off the device completely, press and hold the power button until you see the word “Goodbye” on the LCD Screen.
      • When you are ready to return the Hotspot to the library, place the device and charger in the box. Make sure to return it to the service desk and not in the drop box. 
      • Please be gentle with the device, charger and case!

    • Wifi is available at all locations. No library card is necessary to connect to the wifi network.

      • The Mobile Hotspot can be checked out for 3 weeks.
      • Hotspots can be returned at any HPL TO GO location.
      • Replacement fee if lost/damaged: $80 + $10 processing fee
      • Damaged or missing charger/cord/battery: $10 per item

    • Fines and fees will be charged if the items are returned late or if they are lost or damaged and the library card privileges will be blocked until the Mobile Hotspot/device is returned in working order and outstanding fines are less than $10 on account.

      Late fee for laptops is $25 a day (maximum fine $150). Lost or damaged laptop fees are $300 (laptop cost), $30 processing fee, $10 laptop case and $10 laptop charging fee. Lost or damaged hotspot fee is $80 and $10 for hotspot cable/charger or case.

    • Yes.

      If the Mobile Hotspot is lost or not returned within 1 day after the due date, wireless service will be terminated and the Hotspot will become unusable. The due date is on the receipt given at the time of borrowing. The Library may use any appropriate means to collect the Hotspot/device and amounts owed to the Library due to failure to return it by the Due Date.

      Please make sure the items are returned on time and are not damaged. 

    • Yes. The device (s) can only be checked out with an active adult MY Link library card in good standing.

    • When accessing the Internet through the Hotspot you are accessing the Internet through Sprint’s network and not the Library’s network. Use of the hotspot is subject to Sprint’s Acceptable Use Policy, Privacy Policy, and Terms of Use, all of which are available on Sprint’s website (currently located at www.sprint.com/legal/agreement.html).

      Please read these documents before using the Hotspot. Internet access through the Hotspot is similar to Internet access at any HPL location

    • The Mobile Hotspot/device remains the Library’s property at all times. The Library may request a return on the Hotspot/device at any time. You will never loan out the Hotspot/device to other individuals, avoid damaging it, know where it is at all times and will not disassemble or attempt to repair it. If it is lost, stolen, or damaged, you have to call or visit the Library to notify.

      The Library may choose not to replace or repair the Hotspot/device at its sole discretion. You must return the Hotspot/device (device, power cable, adapter and case) to the Library in the same good working condition as it was when checked out. You will only use the Library provided charger and will be responsible for damage to device if wrong charger is used. Overdue fines and fees may apply if returned late, with missing items and/or damaged.

HPL TO GO FAQs
    • HPL TO GO is a curbside by appointment service that allows MY Link and Learning Link card holders the opportunity to pick up library materials from the comfort and safety of their own vehicles. To participate, simply place items on hold for pick-up at your preferred location online or over the phone. Once items are ready, schedule a time that works for you to pick them up at your preferred HPL TO GO location. 

    • Beginning September 24, same-day appointments will be available. Schedule your curbside pickup appointment here!

    • HPL to Go has transitioned to an appointment system to reduce pickup wait times, and to improve the overall process for staff and customers. The appointment system allows us to serve more customers each hour.

    • HPL TO GO is the beginning of a phased approach to reestablish library services across the city. The safety of the community and staff is a priority for us. Continue to check our website for service updates.  

    • HPL TO GO is a free service available to current MY Link and Learning Link card holders.

      1. Place a hold through our online catalog or by phone. Holds pickup is only available at HPL TO GO locations.
      2. You will be notified via phone or email when your items are available.
      3. Schedule an appointment to pick up your materials after you are notified they are available.
      4. Arrive at your scheduled appointment time, park, and stay in your vehicle.  Call the location.
      5. Once your account is confirmed, library staff will provide additional pickup instructions.
    • Please click here to get a MY Link card online. This will allow you to place holds on materials through our catalog. When you arrive to pick-up your holds at an HPL TO GO location, make sure to bring a valid ID and proof of address so that staff may verify the account and give you a physical MyLink card.

    • Yes. There is a limit of 10 items per Learning Link account at this time. Learning Link accounts do not have “items ready for pickup” notification set up. Please call a library to speak with a staff to set up your child’s pickup notification.

    • MY Link accounts may have 50 items total checked out with DVDs limited to 30. There is a hold limit of 30 items at one time. 
       
      Learning Link accounts may have a total of 10 items checked out (juvenile items for elementary students; juvenile and/or adult items for middle and high school students). There is a hold limit of 10 items. These can be print items or audiobooks

    • For the safety of staff and customers, we are unable to process payments during HPL TO GO. If you need to make a payment, please access your account here. However, at this time, you can check materials out even if you have fines.

    • Please schedule an appointment to pick up your materials at the HPL TO GO location you selected.

    • You can reserve titles online.  If you place a hold on an item that is currently not on the shelf at your chosen HPL TO GO location, it may take up to two weeks for the item to be ready for pickup if that item is available on the shelf at another HPL TO GO location. 

    • Please call your nearest neighborhood library to speak with a staff member to resolve the issue.

    • All physical items currently available at a HPL TO GO location are available to be placed on hold for pickup including hotspots, laptops, DVDs, audiobooks, Flip Kits, etc. 

    • You will receive an email or phone notification based on your account preference. You can also log in to your account here.

    • You will have 7 curbside service days from the date of notification to pick up your holds before the items expire.

    • The safety of our staff and customers are important to us. We have implemented several new procedures and measures to ensure that materials are handled and processed safely which may sometimes cause a delay.  

      If you place a hold on an item that is currently not on the shelf at your chosen HPL TO GO location, it may take up to two weeks for the item to be ready for pickup if that item is available on the shelf at another HPL TO GO location.

      • Place a hold through our online catalog. Holds pickup are only available at HPL locations.   
      • Once your items are available for pickup, you will be notified.
      • After you receive notification, schedule an appointment to pickup your materials
      • Upon arrival, please call the location to notify staff of your arrival.
      • Once the account is confirmed, library staff will provide additional pickup instructions to assist with social distancing and ensure a safe and smooth transaction. 
    • You can have anyone pick up your items for you. However, please ensure that the person picking up your item has your MY Link card and PIN. 

      **For your protection, we will be unable to release your hold items without that information.**

    • Items can be returned at any HPL location via book drop.  Book drops are open 24/7.

      Locations without bookdrop are: 

      • Melcher Neighborhood Library (closed for renovation) 
      • Pleasantville Neighborhood-Library (closed for renovation) 
      • McCrane-Kashmere Gardens Neighborhood Library (mini location) 
      • Lakewood Neighborhood Library (mini location) 
      • HPL Express Southwest (inside Southwest Multiservice Center) 
      • Meyer Neighborhood Library (closed for storm recovery) 
      • Kendall Neighborhood Library (closed for storm recovery)

      If you have items to return and are unable to use the book drop, please place your return items in a disposable bag and bring them to an HPL TO GO location during operating hours. Please park and stay in your vehicle and call the location to let staff know you have arrived. Library staff will retrieve the bagged items from your trunk or back passenger seat. 

      As a safety precaution, please do not place returned items at the curbside table located at HPL TO GO Locations. 

    • All items returned during this time will be placed in quarantine for 7 days. It may take up to 9 days for returned items to be removed from your account. There will be no fines or late fees until further notice.

    • Yes.

      1. Please log in to your account here.
      2. Click on the Holds tab.
      3. Select the item you would like to suspend, then click Suspend Holds.
      4. Input the start and end date of your suspension.

      3. Select the item you would like to cancel, then click Cancel Holds.
    • We are not accepting book donations at this time. Please do not put book donations in the book return or place them at the curbside table.

    • You can use disinfecting wipes on plastic covered books. You can quarantine books for 7 days before use. Please do not spray or wipe paperback books or the pages inside the book as it will cause the pages to become wet and therefore damage the item.

    • All staff members are required to wear gloves, a face mask, and practice social distancing during curbside service. All items returned during this time will be placed in a 7-day quarantine before being removed from customer accounts.

    • Certain items such as board books, fotonovelas, and magazines do not appear in the catalog. Please call your preferred HPL TO GO location to make arrangements to have a selection of up to 5 of these items placed in your next curbside order depending on availability.

Learning Link FAQs
    • The Learning Link is a student’s educational passport to check out books, use online tools and access other services for FREE at all HPL locations and at home. It is a special library account that utilizes a student's ID number, making it easy for students to remember. There is not a physical card associated with these accounts. Each account is created using data provided by the school district. Accounts are automatically created for new students weekly.  

    • This student account is only offered to HISD and Alief ISD students (and staff) at this time. All students are automatically enrolled. You may customize your child's account if you wish to limit access to library material (see below).

      • Stronger reading skills - the more students read, the better their comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary.
      • Academic success - the more students read for fun on their own time, the higher their reading scores and math scores.
      • Good communication skills - readers will be armed with the vocabulary they need to better communicate with their peers, teachers, and parents.
      • Critical thinking skills - readers improve their general knowledge, and more importantly, are able to spot patterns quickly and identify solutions.
    • If you do not want your child to have access to library materials, you may opt out by submitting this form. Be aware that students who opt out of Learning Link will need a Houston Public Library MY Link card and know the full card number and PIN to participate in library activities. Submit one form per child.

    • Students will never have overdue fines on their student library account. Students will be responsible for fees up to $10 per lost or damaged items.

      Accounts will become inactive once a student reaches $50 worth in non-returned books.

    • Students will have full access to HPL's digital media including e-books, databases and online homework help from home using any internet-enabled computer or device. Student accounts do not allow students to check out DVDs, laptops, or any mobile devices from HPL libraries. 

    • An HPL student account is a special library account that utilizes a student's ID number and it's easy for students to remember. There is not a physical card associated with these accounts. Each account is created using data provided by the school district. Accounts are automatically created for new students weekly. 

    • The library barcode of each student account is formatted as follows (with no dash or spaces):

      For HISD: FIRST INITIAL OF LAST NAME followed by student ID number
      Example: John Smith, HISD Student ID Number 12345678
      Library account number is: S12345678

      For Alief ISD: 100, followed by first initial of last name, followed by student ID number
      Example: John Smith, Alief ISD Student ID Number 12345678
      Library account number is 100S12345678

    • Yes. The accounts will use the student's birth month and date as PIN.

      Example: John Smith, Date of Birth: November 24, 2005

    • Students can begin accessing HPL resources by visiting the HPL website and using their student ID number.

    • No. If a student already has a HPL MY Link library card, he/she will continue to be able to use it to check out materials from the library and use in-library computers. The student accounts supplement the MY Link library card and improve each student's ability to access HPL online research tools as part of their school work. Students who do not yet have a MY Link library card may obtain one after verifying eligibility.

    • Any student enrolled at a school in HISD or Alief ISD is eligible for a student account. Accounts are automatically active upon on the first day of school (or student starts). 

    • The student account remains active as long as student is enrolled in the district. It is valid during summer and other school breaks. Accounts will become inactive once a student reaches $50 worth in non-returned books.

    • Students may borrow up to a total of 10 (juvenile items for elementary students; juvenile and/or adult items for middle and high school students) at one time for FREE.  In addition, students may place 10 items on hold. These can be print items or audiobooks. Students will also have unlimited access to digital materials with their Learning Link card, including e-books, e-audio books, and streaming video and music. There are checkout limits but they are the same as for any account, Check E-Books & More for more details. 

    • The standard loan period is three weeks. Most items may be renewed for one additional three week period. The renewal period is calculated from the date the items are renewed. The maximum loan period, including renewal, is six weeks.

    • All HISD and Alief ISD personnel (teachers and staff) receive a Learning Link account as well! This account provides access to HPL’s electronic resources only. For HISD, the library account number is the letter F followed by the HISD staff ID number. For Alief ISD, the library account number is the number 101, followed by the first initial of last name, followed by the Alief staff ID number (example, teacher Jane Smith, employee ID number 123456, the Alief account number is 101S123456). The 4 digit PIN for both HISD and Alief ISD is the staff member’s birth month and date. If a staff member wishes to physically check-out materials from a library location, they will need to use their MY Link library card or sign up for a MY Link card.
