Mayor's Office of Adult Literacy

On 12 17, 2019, Mayor Sylvester Turner officially launched the Mayor’s Office for Adult Literacy (MOAL) The MOAL will focus on enhancing adult literacy advocacy and awareness and its impact on our economy, communities, families and individuals.

The MOAL will also promote awareness of, and advocate and build capacity for, Adult Literacy and Adult Education causes and providers in the City of Houston. The  office was made possible by a generous grant from the CITGO Petroleum Corporation.

Liftoff Houston

Liftoff Houston is the City of Houston's annual business plan competition. It is an entrepreneurial initiative that aims to empower Houstonians with business literacy education and mentorship to start their own businesses while contributing to the local growth and sustainability of the Houston economy.

It is sponsored by Capital One Bank, which provides cash prizes totaling $30,000. Competition details will be posted to our programs and events calendar.

Learning Link is a collaborative effort between HISD, Houston Public Library, City of Houston and H-E-B to rise to the White House ConnectED Challenge pledging to link students to the essential resources they need for achieving success—in school, future careers and daily life.

Through the Learning Link, HISD students will have FREE, 24/7 access to HPL’s vast assortment of books and resources at any library location and at home. All HISD students are automatically enrolled in this program and can use their student ID plus PIN number to access library resources and services. This account does not collect any overdue fines or fees. However, students are responsible for fees for lost books. 

Houston Poet Laureate

The Houston Poet Laureate program is coordinated by the Houston Public Library and the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA). The appointed poet serves a consecutive two-year term, working to foster appreciation of poetry in all its forms and make it accessible to the Houston community, as well as visitors, through expressions of culture through words.

Leslie Contreras Schwartz, Houston’s 2019 Poet Laureate is a graduate of The Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College, she earned a bachelor's at Rice University and now teaches poetry workshops at Rice.
